Hurricane Ready
Before the Season, the 72-Hour Countdown and the First Week After
It is late August. The forecast cone covers your stretch of the coast, and nobody knows yet if the storm will come your way. You have about three days and a lot of advice coming at you. This guide puts those days in order.
Know your zone and when to leave, work through the last 72 hours in order, and come home to a plan for the first week after.

What you'll do with it
- Find your evacuation zone on your county's website, check the storm surge risk map for your address, and write both on Our Hurricane Plan.
- Ask your agent about wind cover and your hurricane deductible before June 1 - a new flood policy usually starts 30 days after you buy it (FEMA).
- Tick the 72-Hour Countdown page when a storm is forecast: a watch comes about 48 hours before tropical-storm-force winds, a warning about 36 (NHC).
- Run from the water, hide from the wind: leave right away when your zone is ordered out; outside the surge zone, ride it out in a small interior room on the lowest floor that will not flood.
- Come home in order: stay at least 35 feet from downed lines, run the generator at least 20 feet from the house, and photograph the damage before you clean up.
